Changing your address with the NJ MVC
New Jersey calls it the MVC, everyone else calls it the DMV, and it is four separate updates rather than one. Here is the order that works, and what each one does not cover.
Four updates, not one
Changing your address after a New Jersey move means updating your driver license, your vehicle registration, your voter registration and your mail, and none of them updates any of the others. Your license and registration both go through the Motor Vehicle Commission, your voter record goes through your county, and mail forwarding is USPS. Do them in that order, the same week you move.

This is the one most people mean when they search for a DMV address change. In New Jersey it goes through the Motor Vehicle Commission, and for most license holders it can be done online without an appointment. You will need your license number and your new address.
Watch out: A license address change does not update your vehicle registration. They are separate records and separate transactions, which is the single most common thing people get caught out by.
Change your vehicle registration address
Every vehicle you own has its own registration record, so if you have two cars you are doing this twice. Registration is what the state uses to reach you about inspection and renewal, so a stale address here is how people end up with a lapsed registration they did not know about.
Watch out: Insurance is a third record again. Your insurer needs the new address separately, and in New Jersey your premium is rated partly on where the car is garaged, so this one can change what you pay.
Update your voter registration
Voter registration is handled by your county, not the MVC. If you moved within the same county it is an update. If you moved to a new county it is effectively a new registration, and there are deadlines before an election.
Watch out: Moving within New Jersey does not carry your registration with you automatically. It is a separate step, and it is the one people forget until an election is close.
Forward your mail, then stop relying on it
USPS mail forwarding is not a government address change, it is a redirect with an expiry date. Set it up so nothing is lost in the gap, then use the forwarded mail as a checklist: every piece that arrives is an account you still need to update at the source.
Watch out: Forwarding runs out. Treat it as a safety net for a few months, not as having changed your address.

How long do I have to change my address after moving in New Jersey?
New Jersey expects you to notify the MVC promptly after a move, and the window is short. Do it the same week you move rather than waiting until the boxes are unpacked. Check the current requirement on the MVC site, since these rules are updated from time to time.
Is a DMV address change the same as an MVC address change in NJ?
Yes. New Jersey does not have a DMV: the agency is the Motor Vehicle Commission, or MVC. Almost everyone still calls it the DMV, and searching for either will get you to the same place.
Do I have to change my license and my registration separately?
Yes. They are separate records and updating one does not update the other. If you own more than one vehicle, each registration is its own update.
Do I need a new license card with the new address on it?
Not always. Whether you need a replacement card or just an updated record depends on your license type and whether you hold a REAL ID. The MVC page for address changes sets out which applies to you.
What else should I update when I move?
Beyond the MVC and voter registration: your insurer, your bank and cards, your employer and payroll, your doctor and pharmacy, your utilities at both ends, your children’s schools, and any subscription that ships you something physical. Working through forwarded mail is the most reliable way to catch the ones you forget.
