How to find the best moving companies in NJ
Four things separate a legitimate New Jersey moving company from the rest, and all four are public. We have listed ours, and we have listed how to verify them for us or for anyone else you are considering.

Is the mover licensed to work in New Jersey?
Fresh Start holds NJ Public Movers License #39PM00129400, registered with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs. Every mover doing in-state household goods work in New Jersey is required to hold one, and you can look ours up by number.
How to check it: Ask for the license number, then check it against the Division of Consumer Affairs register. A mover who will not give you the number is telling you something.

Are they authorized for interstate moves?
Interstate household goods moving is federally regulated and needs USDOT authority, which is separate from a state license. Fresh Start holds USDOT 3855223 and docket MC-1609840, authorized for interstate household goods. Both are yours to check on the FMCSA SAFER register rather than take our word for.
How to check it: Search the company on the FMCSA SAFER register. You want to see AUTHORIZED FOR HHG, not just an active USDOT number, which any truck can have.

What insurance is actually in place?
Fresh Start carries $2M general liability and $1M commercial auto, with full-value protection available on every move.
How to check it: Ask for a certificate of insurance. If your building needs one on file, ask whether the mover files it for you. We do.

How to check it: Read the text, not the stars. Look for reviews that name the foreman, describe the actual day, and are recent. A high average on a dozen reviews means less than a slightly lower one on hundreds.

Any mover doing volume accumulates a bad day eventually. A single one-star review pulls an average down and it does not recover quickly. So a 5.0 across 383 reviews is not a claim about marketing, it is a claim about not having had that day yet, 383 times running.

Ask us anythingWhich moving company has the best reputation?
No mover should answer that about itself, so here is how to settle it without taking anyone's word for it. Look up the USDOT number on the FMCSA SAFER register and check it says AUTHORIZED FOR HHG rather than just showing an active number. Read the one and two star reviews first, and specifically look at whether the company replied to them. Check the complaint history on the same federal register, not just the star rating on one platform. Then ask for a written estimate from two or three companies and compare what each one included rather than the total. Ours are USDOT 3855223 and MC-1609840, so you can run every one of those checks on us before you call anybody.
What are red flags for moving companies?
A quote given over the phone without anyone asking about stairs, access or what is actually in the house. A large deposit asked for up front. No USDOT or MC number on the website, or one that does not show household goods authority on the federal register. A blank or partly filled inventory handed to you to sign. A price that is far below the others, which usually means the real number arrives after the truck is loaded and your belongings are the leverage. On interstate moves, a delivery window of up to two weeks instead of a date, which happens because a shared truck waits to fill. And a company that answers questions about licensing or insurance by changing the subject.

This is the first time I have moved in 27 years. The process of selling/buying a home and packing is overwhelming. Fresh Start Movers was the first company I called for an estimate. The owner came out personally to do the estimate. His price was right in the middle of the 4 estimates I received. With all of their 5 star reviews and wonderful customer service (Christina in the office is outstanding) we decided to use Fresh Start and weren’t disappointed. They arrived on time. The team loading the truck was kind, respectful and finished in the time quoted. They were great guys. Not one piece of furniture was damaged. This is the second time we've used Fresh Start Movers and again, they were the epitome of efficiency, professionalism and compassion. Chrissie and Jimmie arrived on time to pack up two apartments for the movers the next day. They were very orderly and picked up after themselves so we were ready to go. Unfortunately, we had a family emergency the next morning and had to cancel the move. We needed to postpone the move day until further notice. Christina was so accommodating and did everything in her power to reschedule the move as soon as the schedule allowed. Her communication and respectfulness was exemplary and made a very stressful situation much easier. From our first experience, we knew we could trust Fresh Start.
